CPU holds 16th Research and Development Week

The week-long research and development week started on Monday, March 11, 2019, at the CPU Educational Media Center Conference Room with faculty, students and administrators present. University Research Center Director Dr. Mary O’Penetrante and members of the URC Committee (URESCOM) launched the event with the theme “Quality Research: Pathway towards Development and Progress.” Research papers were presented throughout the week according to different categories: Agricultural Engineering, Business Research, Education, Environmental Management, Life Science, and Junior High School among others.

Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Irving Domingo L. Rio, welcomed the participants and acknowledged that the Research and Development Week is important in honing the research skills of faculty and students. University President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, encouraged the participants to continue with research and sustain CPU as a research university. “The more we work together, the more we can accomplish things,” Dr. Robles said.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Alan P. Lena, Education Supervisor II, Commission on Higher Education (CHED), pointed out the need for universities to strengthen their research education. He particularly mentioned how challenging discovery-applied research is and said that this kind of research contributes to the advancement of higher educational institutions.

The 20th Faculty Research Symposium on March 11-12 and the 17th Student Research Symposium on March 12-14 are part of this year’s Research and Development Week.

CPU RCECC conducts seminar on Terrorism Awareness and Bomb Threat Management

Addressing the need to strengthen public safety and security—The Central Philippine University Review, Continuing Education and Consultancy Center held a five-day seminar on “Terrorism Awareness and Bomb Threat Management” at the Educational Media Center on January 28-February 1, 2019.

In his welcome remarks during the opening program, CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, highlighted the necessity of prioritizing the safety and security of all institutions that cater to community and educational needs in order to ensure that peace and progress will not be disturbed.

CPU Vice President for Finance and Administration and the Chairperson of the Calamity and Disaster Committee, Dr. Florence P. Bogacia, talked about the importance of conducting such seminars to protect and promote the over-all safety of students, faculty, and staff.

Mr. Prim C. Vergara III, Occupational Safety and Health Officer, introduced the first speaker, Mr. Nathaniel Laxa, a retired U.S. Navy, for the training proper.

Days one and two of the seminar focused on top management training. Day three focused on intensive training for security force; day four revolved around intensive training for fire brigade with Mr. Alfred A. Go, Safety Officer, as speaker; and day five highlighted the training for search and rescue and medical evacuation with Mr. Eugene D. Boco, Emergency Medical Technician, as trainer.

Through trainings like these, the university is optimistic that it can prevent security issues in the future and respond efficiently in cases of emergencies. As CPU prioritizes the safety of its students, faculty and staff, it is committed to continually providing innovative measures to ensure that the university will be a risk-free campus for all.

CPU holds 1st Mental Health Summit

The Iloilo Mental Health Summit was held on September 21, 2018 at the Rose Memorial Auditorium, Central Philippine University. Senator Risa Hontiveros was invited as a guest and resource speaker. The conference, which is a first of its kind, was a CPU Republic initiative and its goal was to contribute to mental health awareness. Other resource speakers from the medical profession were also invited and some Iloilo City officials were also present at the event.

University President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, welcomed the participants, expressing his gratitude for the relevance of the summit to society today. Hon. Joe Espinosa III, Iloilo City Mayor and Dr. Maria Sophia Pulmones, Chief, MPM, Local Health Support Division, Department of Health – Region 6 delivered their messages, respectively.

Two winning films, Abyan and Indi na Ko Tani, were then shown to the participants. These films tackled topics in relation to mental health to highlight the importance of mental health and why it needs to be addressed.

Afterwards, Dr. Candice Tupas, Iloilo City Councilor, talked about the science of mental health while Jo Jan Paul Peñol, Centralian alumnus and former Editor-in-Chief, Central Echo, talked about overcoming mental health issues by leading a healthy lifestyle. Rev. Cris Amorsolo Sian, Rev. Sian talked about the spiritual aspect of mental well-being. Several other speakers took turns in sharing insights about mental health and real stories of struggling against and surviving their mental health issues.

Senator Risa Hontiveros, for her part, discussed the essence of the Mental Health Law to the youth and society. It can be recalled that Sen. Hontiveros is the author of Republic Act No. 1103, the Mental Health Law.

Before her talk in the summit, Hontiveros held an audience with representatives from the Iloilo media. She emphasized that her presence in the summit is an opportunity for her to discuss and detail the essence and fundamentals of the Mental Health Law.

The open forum was then held, followed by an awarding ceremony for video campaign competition.

CPUR President, John Michael Suelo, delivered the closing message before the lunch break. A roundtable discussion took place with Senator Hontiveros and the students after lunch.

During the event, a song number, “Who You Are,” was rendered by Ms. Sharie Faith Biñas, a World Championship of Performing Arts medalist, USA-California and ABS-CBN Tawag ng Tanghalan daily winner.

CPU CBA, RCECC and URC hold International Research Conference

CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, highlighted the importance of research in promoting progress.

With the theme “Global Entrepreneurship: Innovation, Creativity, and Technology,” the Central Philippine University College of Business and Accountancy, together with the University Research and the Review, Continuing Education, and Consultancy Center, held an International Research Conference at the Educational Media Center on August 28-29, 2018.

Rev. Cris Amorsolo V. Sian, Senior Pastor, University Church, led the opening prayer. It was then followed by the welcome remarks given by CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles. In his message, Dr. Robles welcomed the guests and participants, “We’re happy that we [conducted again] this international conference. The first one was in November 2015 and we had an international conference with multi-disciplinary topics and we have started putting it in publications for our international journal.” He also highlighted the importance of sharing ideas and output through the publication of research journals.

Delegates from all over the country participated in the 2018 CPU International Research Conference.

Dr. Florence P. Bogacia, Vice President, CPU Finance and Administration, gave the statement of purpose and order of presentation. Dr. Bogacia highlighted the importance of sharing research output as an integral part of higher education: “This conference will highlight two types of study: the business plan and the feasibility study. This conference on global entrepreneurship allows formal university exchanges. It is an invaluable response to academics who are documenting new business ventures. It provides a platform where students can advance their business ideas and illicit feedback from fellow students and gain valuable advice from faculty members and other people.”

Dr. Rowena M. Libo-on, Director, Transnational Programs and Acting Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Cho Jaehoon, Professor of the Industry University Collaborations, Linc+, Tongmyong University, Busan, South Korea.

In his message, Dr. Jaehoon talked about the economic development of South Korea and the entrepreneurship education offered by Tongmyong University. He also emphasized the importance of global competitiveness in opening various employment opportunities in various industries.

Leong-on from CPU discussed “Dream Tea”; Hasuka Suematsu from Fukuoka University, Japan discussed his small business model entitled “All Natural One-Stop Shop Basic Home Furnishings: The Japanese Model”; Krista Joy D. Lenaming, Leo Sim C. Soldevilla, and Jenry B. Yu from CPU talked about “A Reverse Tuck-end Folding Carton Package Development for Eraser Green Soap Manufactured by Mikay Organics, Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental, Philippines”; Anneline L. Palmaira from CPU discussed her study “Diet Ko”; Moon Kyeong Ryeol from Tongmyong University, Busan, South Korea talked about “International Marketing through YouTube reaction Video”; Angela D. Besiño and Karenina P. Depamaylo from CPU discussed “GDT Trucking Service Feasibility Study.”

During the second day of the conference, Prof. Ma. Cora E. Biton from the Iloilo Science and Technology University presented her study entitled “State of Entrepreneurship among Business Schools in Iloilo City: Basis for Developing a Sustainable Entrepreneurship Program”; Dr. Anwarul Wadud from Philippine Christian University talked about “Bangladeshi in the Philippines: Their Career Growth and Development”; Dr. Myrna T. Luceño, Dr. Armando M. Hisuan Jr. and Prof. Mary Ann C. Garrido from CPU discussed their study entitled “Indigenous Cooking Methods and Practices in Central Panay”; Dr. Thi Gam Nguyen, Dr. Thi Thanh Huyen Ta from Thai Nguyen University, Thai Nguyen, Vietnam and Le Huyen Trang from Thang Long University, Hanoi, Vietnam presented their study “Applying the Structural Equation Model to Analyze the Impact of Retail Service Quality on Customer’s Satisfaction and Customer Loyalty in Hanoi Supermarkets”; Dr. Mark Lister F. Opiña from CPU shared the output of his study entitled “Human Resource Management and Extent of Organizational Innovation Practices among Public & Private Hospitals in the Island of Panay: Their Implications on Organizational Efficiency”; Dr. George R. West from Regent University, Virginia, USA talked about his study, “Examining the Relationship Between Entrepreneurial Orientation and Organizational Performance: The Moderating Role of Organizational Learning”; Dr. Narciso Immanuel C. Managuelod from Philippine Christian University presented his study entitled “Strategic Model in Enhancing Communities Social and Economic Development through Cooperatives in the Province of Isabela”; Atty. Salex E. Alibogha, Dean, CPU College of Nursing presented his study “Project Entrepreneurship: Demystifying Entrepreneurial Mind in the Nursing Profession” and Dr. Ian B. Arcega from Capiz State University who talked about “Tryk Technology: A Student Enterprise Partnership at CAPSU, Capiz Province, Philippines.”

WSSP holds seminar on Personality Development

Empowering Centralians by innovating the heart and mind—The Central Philippine University Work Student Study Program held a Personality Development Seminar for Centralian work students at the Educational Media Center on March 5, 2018.

For the opening remarks, Prof. Annalie Gilongos, WSSP Coordinator, encouraged the work students to persevere, to work hard, and to offer their success to God. The seminar featured Mandy Salcedo, a graduate of CPU Development High School and one of Iloilo City’s top fashion designers. Salcedo studied at the Manchester School of Fine Arts in London, England.

During the open forum, participants got to express their queries.

In his message, Salcedo encouraged the working students to pursue their dreams and to be strong in times of challenges because success is bound to arrive. He also shared his journey as an aspiring designer. Salcedo talked about the importance of believing in oneself and one’s capacity for success.

Apart from protecting the welfare of the Centralian work students, the WSSP seeks to conduct activities and seminars that cater to the holistic training of Centralian work students. The organization’s dedication is seen in their continuous support to enrich and inspire work students to achieve their dreams.

CPU RCECC, DLMCH, UBCHEA hold seminar on Values Education

With the aim of transforming lives and producing exemplary Christian learners for life, the Central Philippine University Review, Continuing Education and Consultancy Center and the Department of Languages, Mass Communications and Humanities in partnership with the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA) held a seminar on “Youth Empowerment through Values Education” at the Conference Room 1, 4th Floor Henry Luce III Library on February 8, 2018.

The seminar is part of the UBCHEA approved project grant, “Values Education Module for Teaching and Conduct of Service Learning Seminars,” of Prof. Sharlene G. Gotico, Chairman, Department of Languages, Mass Communications and Humanities and Prof. Anna Mae Zerrudo, OIC, Office of International Relations and Cooperation.

The project aims to produce values education learning modules to help teachers become more effective in their teaching of Values Education and/or Religious Education and contribute to the production of modules for the classroom and the wider community. When completed, the module will be distributed to select elementary schools, high schools, rehabilitation centers, and other organizations that accommodate displaced children, teens, and the like.

On April 12, 2017, UBCHEA has approved institutional grants for three projects proposed by CPU for the academic year 2017-2018. The grant agreement was signed by CPU President Dr. Teodoro C. Robles on April 12, 2017 at the CPU Administration Conference Room.

CPU RCECC and CPU Kindergarten hold Intensive Certificate Course in Teaching English to Young Learners

Helping teachers encourage young minds to be globally competitive—The
Central Philippine University Review, Continuing Education and Consultancy Center in cooperation with the CPU Kindergarten held an intensive certificate course in Teaching English to Young Learners at the Educational Media Center on January 4-5, 2018.

The short course featured lecturer Prof. Marco A. Brazil considered as Asia’s King of Games. Brazil is a well experienced teacher for children and teacher trainer who has been writing, presenting, and developing teaching materials for over 15 years. He works for Shubunsha a division of GAKKEN Corporation as Director of BEANS English School in this capacity. He is also a regular and popular workshop presenter of Oxford University Press Teaching Workshop Series.

The workshop-lecture included sessions on Multiple Intelligence, such as “How Do Children Learn?” and “Multiple Intelligences in the 21stCentury Classroom.” Other topics were on using drills (“Fundamentals of Drilling” and “Different Types of Drilling”) and games (“Communication Games in Teaching Children” and “Why Use Games in the English Classroom”) inside the classroom. Other subjects discussed were “Why Use Active Learning Approach?” and “Phonics and Sight Words: Empowering Children to Read and Classroom Management and Guidance.”

For the opening remarks, CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles highlighted the importance of making children love learning by encouraging them to be curious and observant, “I believe that in the first five years in the life of a child, we have to teach them to love learning not only in the classroom but also at home.”
